Armistice Day/Remembrance Sunday 2018

Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday both fall on the same day this year.

As Ward Member for Chieveley, I think it appropriate we commemorate the end of the First World War, and the sacrifice made by Chieveley people, in a meaningful and respectful way.

I have spoken to Chieveley Parish Council, and the Churchwardens of St Mary's Chieveley, who are supportive of this suggestion.

My proposal is that we have a banner, which the Royal British Legion can supply, in a prominent position in the village.

I also want to individually commemorate the sacrifice of the individuals whose names are on the war memorial and who died during this conflict. This will be done by mounting large poppies on individual posts, with a plaque giving the name, rank and regiment of the individual. These posts will then be displayed throughout the village, hopefully some can be placed at or near where these people lived.

I have committed to raising the funding for this, the Parish Council has already kindly agreed to fund the cost of the banners. Contributions from either individuals or organisations will be gratefully received, as will help to assemble and distribute the commemorative poppy posts nearer the time.

I do hope that those reading this will agree this is a worthwhile and suitable commemoration.

Should you wish to help or contribute, please either call me on 01635 248542 or email me at hilary.cole@westberks.gov.uk

Thank you.
